Microcomputer hardware service
Since October 1991, the University has had a computer hardware service
agreement with the Desktop Services Division of Digital Equipment Corp.
(DEC). DEC has a shop on campus at 324 Wyoming Ave., which can be reached
by calling 1-800-DEC-TOPS.
For equipment purchased from the Computer Warehouse, DEC will repair,
free of charge, any Apple, Everex, HP, Zenith or DEC product during the
warranty periods. For other products, such as IBM, a $50 fee is charged for
repairs during the warranty period.
DEC also provides repair service and contracts for equipment not
purchased through the University, provided DEC deals with that vendor. DEC
charges $100 to install equipment which is not purchased at the Computer
Warehouse.
After warranty, to use DEC service for University-owned equipment,
either an annual service contract is available or individual repairs can be
made as needed, charged on a time and materials basis ($65 per hour for
labor plus the cost of parts). Computers purchased for personal use can be
placed under a depot repair service contract, which requires the equipment
to be brought to the DEC shop at 324 Wyoming Ave. for service.
The price of a service contract depends on the level of service
required (same day, next day or depot repair) and the actual equipment
components. (For example, a system with a 20MB hard drive will have
different annual contract fees than a system with a hard drive that's
greater than 150MB.)
For equipment under contract with a problem that can't be determined
(hardware, software, data communications or personal error), it's a good
idea to get help before calling DEC. Call CNS User Services at 831-1205 or
contact your individual department's computer resource persons (CRP).
A committee of University and DEC staff meets monthly to discuss
problems and issues with DEC service on campus. If you are having problems
with equipment repairs or for more information on the terms of the
service contract, contact Kate Webster in CNS User Services at 831-1993 or
by e-mail kate@brahms.udel.edu.
