Winter Commencement in Bob Carpenter Center Jan. 9

     The University of Delaware's 1993 Winter Commencement will be held at
2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 9, in the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center,
marking the first use of the new facility for an academic ceremony.
     The annual ceremony recognizes students who complete their degree
requirements in August and December. More than 550 students are expected to
attend the ceremony.
     Seating is limited, and tickets are required for the ceremony. Each
graduating student was entitled to a maximum of eight guest tickets.
     At the Winter Commencement ceremony, Anna Janney DeArmond, professor
emeritus in English, will be awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters
degree. She joined the Department of English in 1935, and, although she
retired in 1975, she continues to teach one or two courses a year,
including classes at the Academy of Lifelong Learning.
     Featured speaker at the ceremony will be Delaware alumnus Andrew M.
Stern, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Sunwest
Communications Inc., a full-service public relations firm in Dallas.
     At Delaware, Stern was active in student government and served as
editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, The Review, in 1970. He served as
press secretary to the mayor of Wilmington and directed communications
activities for the Delaware Medical Center.
     In 1975, Stern was appointed staff assistant to President Gerald R.
Ford at the White House and served in that position through the end of
Ford's term in 1977.
     From 1977-80, he was director of public relations and advertising for
Wylain Inc., a Dallas-based diversified manufacturer and then served as
senior vice president for the Associates Corp. of North America, a $22
billion international financial services corporation.
     Called "one of the top pr executives in Dallas" in Adweek, Stern was
elected to his current post in 1984, after serving as the communications
company's president since its formation in 1982. He now directs the Sunwest
group of companies, which includes Stern, Nathan & Perryman, a full-service
public relations firm formed in 1987; the Jolesch Co., a sports/events
marketing company acquired in 1987; and the parent company, Sunwest
Communications.
     Active in community and political affairs, Stern currently chairs both
the Dallas Children's Advocacy Center, a national model for inter-agency
cooperation on child abuse, and the Advisory Committee for Girls Adventure
Trails. He also serves on the board of the Dallas Museum of Natural History
and the University of Texas at Dallas, where he is a member of the
executive committee.
     Stern and his wife Sabina, a 1971 Delaware graduate, have two sons,
David, a student at the University of North Texas, and Eric, a high school
senior. They live in Dallas.
