Kenneth Lewis selected first B&E Chaplin Tyler Professor

     Kenneth A. Lewis, a member of the University of Delaware faculty since
1973, has been named the first Chaplin Tyler Professor of Business at the
University, Provost R. Byron Pipes announced today.
     This named professorship is funded by an endowment made possible by a
$2 million gift to the University from Chaplin Tyler of Hockessin. Funds
from Tyler also have been assigned to a building fund for a new College of
Business and Economics facility and to support outstanding students in the
college.
     "I believe Prof. Lewis is a superb choice for the first Chaplin Tyler
professorship," Pipes said, in making the announcement. "This special gift
from Mr. Tyler makes possible such recognition, and we are extremely
grateful for this opportunity to reward demonstrated accomplishment among
the faculty."
     "This is well-deserved recognition for Ken Lewis, whose record in
teaching, research and public service sets a standard of excellence in our
college," Kenneth R. Biederman, dean of the College of Business and
Economics, said.
     Named professorships honor distinguished scholarship and teaching and
are awarded only to select members of the faculty.
     A cum laude graduate of Amherst College, Lewis received his doctorate
in economics from Princeton University.
     He joined the faculty of Boston College for six years before coming to
Delaware as an associate professor.
     He was named associate chairperson of the Department of Economics in
1976 and promoted to full professor in 1980.
     He also served at acting chairperson of the department in 1981-82 and
during several Winter Sessions.
     In 1977, Lewis received a University excellence-in-teaching award, and
he has received outstanding teaching awards from the Business and Economics
Council in 1974, 1980, 1986 and 1992.
     Specializing in the areas of money and banking, mathematical
economics, macroeconomics, microeconomics, econometrics and econometric
modeling, he is the author or co-author of more than 25 articles in
professional journals and has made several presentations at professional
meetings.
     Recipient or co-recipient of several research grants, Lewis is the
author or co-author of research reports on such topics as "Economic Impact
of the Financial Center Development Act of 1981 on the State of Delaware:
Employment and General Fund Revenue" and "Estimation of Gross State Product
for the State of Delaware and Its Relationship to  State Expenditures."
     Co-director of the Delaware Econometric Model since 1974, Lewis has
served on the Delaware Economic and Financial Advisory Council and chaired
its Revenue Forecasting Committee since 1977.
     He chaired the state's Committee on Fiscal Impact of 1986 Federal Tax
Act on Delaware and served as a consultant to the Delaware Transportation
Authority from 1984-85.
     Lewis is a member of the American Economics Association, the
Econometric Society, the American Finance Association, the Western Finance
Association and the American Statistical Association.
