Annual Delaware Women's Conference in March
Maya Angelou, widely hailed as "one of the great voices of
contemporary black literature," will be guest speaker at the ninth annual
Delaware Women's Conference, to be held Saturday, March 6, in Clayton
Hall.
Described as "one of the great voices of contemporary black
literature," Angelou is known for 10 best-selling novels, including I Know
Why the Caged Bird Sings, Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water "'Fore I Die,
Gather Together in My Name and Singin' and Swingin' and Gettin' Merry Like
Christmas.
Angelou is well known as a poet, educator, historian, actress,
playwright, civil rights activist, producer and director. She speaks and
writes about the black experience, the female experience and the human
condition.
In the '60s, at the request of Dr. Martin Luther King, Angelou became
the Northern coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
Her autobiography was the subject of a two-hour television special.
The all-day campus conference will offer workshops in the areas of
creativity, personal growth, women's issues, finance and investments,
health and nutrition, careers and leisure pursuits.
Registration forms will be sent to all women employees at the
University in January. Financial assistance and child care are available.
The Delaware Women's Conference is sponsored by the Junior League of
Wilmington Inc., the Delaware Commission for Women, Wilmington Women in
Business and the YWCA of New Castle County.
