New class of PTTP actors to offer Shakespeare's 'Henry V'
Forty-nine new students make up the second three-year theatre
class now enrolled in the University's Professional Theatre Training
Program (PTTP).
The 38 actors, five stage managers and six technical directors
will combine talents for the group's first production, Shakespeare's
Henry V. Performances will run from Dec. 4-18 in Hartshorn Theatre.
The 49 students in the PTTP's class of '95 were selected from
more than 450 applicants who auditioned and interviewed for program
slots during an intensive recruitment drive through major U.S. cities
last spring.
The new students range in age from 21 to 46, and the average age
is 27. Included are nine minority students, as well as one student
from New Zealand and one from Mexico. Several of the actors hold
Actors Equity cards. Of the actors, 15 are women and 23 are men. Of
the five stage managers, four are women. All six technical directing
students are men.
During the first half of PTTP's three-year cycle, the group
presents performance projects, which are fully produced productions of
especially challenging classic plays specifically chosen for the
training and development of the students. During the second half, PTTP
presents productions that are selected from among the world's great
plays in order to provide audience members with a broad range of
dramatic heritage.
The first performance project, Henry V, will have several
students cast in each role, and a single character may be played by
many actors in the course of a performance.
Tentatively scheduled for the spring are two more performance
projects, Romeo and Juliet and As You Like It.
Henry V is a captivating tale of conspiracy and intrigue. In it,
Henry, once a young rascal of questionable character, has become a
wise and beloved king. As an inspiring leader he marches with his men
against France for the conquest of the king's rightful inheritance.
The tale is sprinkled with entertaining and comical characters and one
of Shakespeare's most delightful love scenes.
Evening performances of Henry V, scheduled at 7:30 p.m. on Dec.
4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 17 and 18. Matinees, scheduled at
12:30 p.m., will be presented Dec. 12 and 13.
