Three faculty win top international design awards during
conference
Three faculty members from the University's Department of
Textiles, Design and Consumer Economics took all the top faculty/
professional honors at the International Textiles and Apparel
Association (ITAA) Design Competition and Runway Show, held at the
annual meeting in Columbus, Ohio, Oct. 23.
M. Jane Matranga, associate professor, received $500 and a Steven
Stipelman illustration for the Best of Show for "Los Cirios De Baja,"
a knee-length swing cost fabricated in hand-woven, India cotton
ottoman. Integrating drawing, painting and apparel design, the coat is
air-brushed and hand-painted with a panoramic view of the desert
landscape, inspired by the idria forests in the Vizcaino Desert of
Baja, Calif. Bones, leather cording and a skull form the closure.
M. Jo Kallal, associate professor, received $250 and a Stipelman
illustration for the outstanding use of fabric/materials for "Sauterne
Clusters," a two-piece evening dress using sauterne (yellow-green)
silk twill for the sarong-style skirt and aubergine silk chiffon for
the top. Exploring techniques for fitting the three-dimensional body
using whole pieces of fabric, the fit was achieved in the skirt by
wrapping fabric clusters with matching rayon yarns and employing
draping, knotting and high-quality machine techniques.
Karen E. Schaeffer, associate professor, and Matranga received
$250 and a Stipelman illustration for the most creative for "Yi Long"
(Jade Dragon). Inspired by Chinese jade and celadon, art, costume and
dragons, "Yi Long" is made primarily of green polyisoprene scales
extending from the collar through the two-foot long train (tail).
Polyisoprene was also used to create the Chinese ball button and loop
closure. The headdress is constructed of black and green polyisoprene,
balsa wood, millinery wire and beads. Techniques used include
stitching, braiding, fringing, typing, painting, gluing, beading,
wrapping and wiring.
Two entries, "Trapped" and "Encapsulation," by L. Dixon-Speller,
assistant professor, were finalists at the competition.
Kallal also served as chair of the 1992 runway show and
exhibition catalogues, which included responsibility for the text and
layout of the catalogs. Matranga illustrated the catalog.
