Relache to present music of today
New music-the music of today that speaks to current situations
and emotions-will be presented at its best at 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 20,
when the Relache Ensemble presents "Music Without Boundaries."
The concert is scheduled at 8 p.m. in the Loudis Recital Hall of
the Amy E. du Pont Music Building.
Philadelphia-based Relache has been described a "smooth, hip,
understated" ensemble dedicated to "revealing and affirming the most
significant dimensions of contemporary music and the sonic arts."
Founded in l977, the group has a repertoire of over 350 works,
all composed over the past 20 years and many composed just for it.
Relache is widely recognized for its interpretive and technical
skills, providing a unique insight into verbal and graphic scores,
traditionally notated scores and those conceived for "variable
ensemble."
Lloyd Shorter, administrator for music programs at the
University, plays oboe and English horn for Relache. A
work-in-progress by Fred Wei-han Ho, composer, arranger, writer and
political activist, will be included on Friday's program. Entitled
"Contradiction Please!," the work combines elements from his Chinese
heritage and jazz.
Ho will present a special lecture/demonstration on new music from
2:30-3:30 p.m., Nov. 20, also in the Loudis Recital Hall. The lecture
is free and open to the public.
Concert tickets are $8 for the general public, $5 for senior
citizens, University faculty and staff, and free to students. They are
available by calling 831-2204 or from the box office in Hartshorn
Gymnasium.
Presented by the University's Performing Arts Series, this event
is sponsored by the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation and Delaware Division
of the Arts.
