Photo exhibition features building's history, visitors

George Bush and Gloria Steinem have been there, and chances are
you have been, too. It's the University's John M. Clayton Hall, whose
20th anniversary will be marked today with a special reception and the
opening of the exhibit: "John M. Clayton Hall: A Doorway to the
University."
The exhibit of photos commemorates the building's history and
stresses the idea that, as the home of the Division of Continuing
Education, Clayton Hall provides a point of access for many different
people who benefit from the University, while also celebrating Clayton
Hall's contribution to the University's outreach mission.
The exhibition focuses on activities at Clayton Hall sponsored by
University groups and outside groups, and it pays tribute to the
success of the ACCESS Center, which serves returning adult students.
Other exhibit panels detail the building's construction or talk about
the building's namesake, John Middlleton Clayton.
Among the University events highlighted in the exhibit are Center
for Composite Materials' annual spring workshop and fall research
symposium; art exhibitions in many media, the Governor's School for
Excellence, Founders Day celebrations, employee retirement parties and
alumni events.
Outside groups who use Clayton Hall and who are included in the
exhibition include W.L. Gore, Delmarva Power, the Du Pont Co. and IBM.
The Delaware Women's Conference and the Mid-Atlantic Division of the
Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet
Singing of America are noted as two outside organizations that
annually use Clayton Hall.
Many famous faces have passed through the doors of Clayton Hall
during its 20-year history. Some of those highlighted in the
exhibition include Edmund Muskie, Shirley Chisolm, Dean Rusk, Eugene
McCarthy, Julius Erving, Patricia Neal and Molly Yard.
In the portion of the exhibition ono the ACCESS center,
continuing education students pay tribute to the University's Division
of Continuing Education. Student Nancy Perry says, "Returning to the
University has been one of the most fantastic experiences of my life."
And student Mary Angerer says the center "made it so easy for me to
return to school that I have frequently suggested to friends and
others that they should give it a try, too."
The exhibit will be on display through the end of December.
