Performing Arts Series a potpourri                                   
     The 1992-93 Performing Art Series will begin its season Friday, 
Sept. 18. Two package series are available or individual tickets for 
concerts may be purchased. For tickets, call the Mitchell Hall box   
office at 831-2204, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon-5 p.m. For   
information, call 831-2852.                                          
     The fall series includes:                                       
     Friday, Sept. 18-World-renowned harpsichordist Igor Kipnis with 
        the Renaissance ensemble, Calliope, 8 p.m., Newark Hall      
        auditorium.  Kipnis will narrate "The Bestiary" by Peter     
        Schickele (PDQ Bach).                                        
     Wednesday, Oct. 14-The Uptown String Quartet will perform an    
        unusual repertoire of spirituals, blues, R&B and ragtime,    
        8 p.m., Newark Hall auditorium.                              
     Friday, Nov. 20-Relache, a contemporary music ensemble from     
        Philadelphia, whose program includes a work in progress by   
        Fred Ho, musically combining his Chinese heritage and jazz,  
        8 p.m., Loudis Recital Hall, Amy E. du Pont Music Building.  
     Sunday, Dec. 6-Seasonal concert by the music department faculty,   
        3 p.m. and 8 p.m., Loudis Recital Hall, Amy E. du Pont Music 
        Building.                                                    
                                                               
Music department's gala concert Sept. 9                              
     The faculty of the music department will be showcased in an     
Annual Gala Concert at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 9 at the Loudis      
Recital Hall of the Amy E.du Pont Music Building. Doors will open at 
7:30 p.m. for the free, public event.                                
     Selections, which span four centuries and two continents, will be        
performed by the Faculty Jazz Ensemble, Karen Flint, David Herman,   
Christine Delbeau, Julie Nishimura, Alan Hamant, Marcy Rosen, Jay    
Hildebrandt, Marie Robinson, Michael Steinberg, the Delaware Brass   
Quintet, the Taggart-Grycky Flute and Guitar Duo and the Mendelssohn 
String Quartet.                                                      
     A meet-the-artists reception will follow in the building's      
atrium.                                                              
                                                               
Sen. William V. Roth to open B&E series                              
     U.S. Sen.William V. Roth will kick off this year's business and 
economics breakfast series on Tuesday, Sept. 15, in Arsht Hall on the
Wilmington campus. His topic is "Toward a Competitive American       
Future."                                                             
     The series will feature talks by faculty from the College of    
Business and Economics and other noted Delawareans. An American-style
buffet will be served, and the cost is included in the registration  
fee. Participants can register for individual sessions or the series.
     Future programs include: "A Forecast of the State Budget," by   
Edward Ratledge, director of the University's Center for Applied     
Demographic and Survey Research; "He Sleeps in Jersey: The Saga of   
Jimmy Hoffa" by Arthur Sloane, professor of business administration; 
"Economic Prospects for Delaware" by John Stapleford, director of the
University's Bureau of Economic and Business Research; "Measuring    
Perception of Service Quality" by Ajay Manrai, associate professor of
marketing; and "Privatization of Real Estate and Joint Venturing in  
the Russian Federation" by Jack P. Stoltz, president of Stoltz Realty
Co. and Stoltz Bros. Ltd.

Seminar on writing grant proposals set                               
     A three-session seminar series on writing proposals for grants  
and funding information will be held from 1:30-5 p.m., Sept. 22-24, in        
the Kirkwood Room of the Perkins Student Center.                     
     The first two sessions deal with grant preparation.The third    
presents funding information. Participants may sign up for the series,        
both writing seminars or the funding information session. Sponsored by        
the Office of the Vice Provost for Research, the series will be      
conducted by Marvin B. Sussman, Unidel Professor Emeritus of Human   
Behavior and research consultant in the vice provost's office.

SDALL fall classes to begin in Milford                               
     A course catalog from the Southern Delaware Academy of Lifelong 
Learning for adults 55 and older is available from the Milford Center,        
15 Southwest Front St., telephone 423-5000.                          
     This fall session, from Sept. 22-Dec. 8, prospective academy    
members may sample a five-week course for $20 or a 10-week course for
$40. The regular fee of $60 entitles members access to an unlimited  
number of courses.                                                   
     This fall, two courses will be offered at the Lewes Library on  
Tuesdays. A morning course is "Weather and Air Traffic Control," and 
an afternoon session is "Yesterdays for Tomorrow," about writing     
family stories for future generations.                               
                                                               
Delaware coast is symposium topic                                    
     A symposium,"The Delaware Coastal Zone Act: Celebrating the Past,        
Charting the Future," will be held from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Oct. 22, in
the Gold Ballroom of the Hotel du Pont in Wilmington. Sponsored by the        
University of Delaware Sea Grant College Program and Graduate College
of Marine Studies and the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and        
Environmental Contol, the symposium will cost $30, including lunch.

Faculty sopranos to perform in Loudis                                
     Free, public faculty recitals will feature soprano Melanie DeMent        
at 8 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 10, and soprano Marie Robinson at 3 p.m., 
Sunday, Sept. 13, at the Loudis Recital Hall in the Amy E. du Pont   
Music Building.                                                      
     DeMent, assistant professor of voice, will present a program    
including "Non piu di fiori" from La Clemenze di Tito by Mozart; songs        
by Charles Koechlin and Richard Trunk; "Three Sonnets of William     
Shakespeare for soprano, clarinet and piano" by Michael Horvit; and a
cantata by Giovanni Battista Brevi. She will be assisted by          
clarinetist Vincent Marinelli and pianist Julie Nishimura.           
     Robinson, accompanied by Nishimura, and will sing Erlkonig by   
Schubert, Ah, perfido! by Beethoven, songs by Schumann, Poulenc and  
Robert Hogenson and a set of spirituals.                             
                                                               
Show to mark DIAE 10th anniversary                                   
     The Delaware Institute for the Arts in Education (DIAE) will    
present Sandi Shackelford in a one-woman play, An Audience with Fanny
Kemble, from 8-10 p.m., Friday, Nov. 6, at Copeland Hall, Winterthur 
Museum.                                                              
     Based on the famous actress' diaries, the play focuses on a time
in her life when she was the wife of Pierce Butler and mistress of his        
Georgia plantation, where she tried to improve the conditions of the 
700 slaves living there. Admission is $20. For information, call
