Wanted: Faculty members with global perspectives (comments)
Studying abroad provides an exceptional opportunity for faculty and
students. It is an exciting cultural experience for both. The
support from the International Programs and Special Sessions before
and during the session abroad is outstanding, in terms of
recruitment, orientation meetings, finances and living and
transportation arrangements"
-Charles Marler,
associate professor of educational studies
Faculty members can make a crucial difference in students
educational experiences by being willing to participate in study
abroad programs. It is important to expand student horizons through
studies and residence in a foreign country. It is a meaningful
experience for faculty and students alike. I had no real problems,
and the students' attitude was that this was an opportunity not to
be wasted. We still get together for reunions, and many of the
students have formed close friendships."
-Willard Fletcher,
professor emeritus of history
"It is exciting to see the personal growth of students in a study
abroad program. They get to know themselves better and what their
goals are. A close group spirit develops. For example, I am still
in touch with some members of the first group I accompanied to
Vienna in 1975 and we hold a reunion at least once a year."
-Edeltraut Gilgenast,
assistant professor of foreign languages
and literatures
