United Way volunteer; Professor goes the distance
My wife has been active with the YWCA for years and I'm one of
those husbands who just seems to get volunteered for things,"
laughed Robert J. Taggart, associate professor of educational
studies and president of the University's Faculty Senate. But,
Taggart concedes, all those volunteer hours have made him a strong
supporter of the YWCA and of the United Way.
"I've ended up timing five-mile races, driving the sag vehicle
(that picks up the exhausted) for biathlons, and recently I was
even talked into wearing a Mario Brothers outfit to encourage
children participating in a special Children's Triathlon that the
Y held in Newark. I had on a gingham shirt and overalls made for
someone five foot two and this big fiberglass head. I had to shout
and point the way for the kids. I guess they were happy to see me.
"I was a cub master once, which is another agency that
receives support from the United Way, but most of my involvement
has been with the YW. It's a good organization to support women's
and children's issues."
The University's United Way campaign kicked off Oct. 14. The
fund drive continues through Oct. 25.
