Q&A
What does all this mean for me? What should I be doing?
At this point, let your correspondents outside the
University know of the change. Be particularly mindful of
individuals and firms that communicate with you via fax. If
you or your office has an answering machine, revise your
message to include mention of the upcoming changeover. Also,
and this is important, contact a member of the Centrex
Transition Team and offer any suggestions you may have to
reach the University's wide-ranging constituencies with news
of the changeover.
What are the new telephone numbers?
University academic and administrative office phone
numbers beginning with 451, 453 and 292 will begin with 831,
and residence hall phones beginning with 731 and 738 will
begin with 837. The last four digits of the telephone number
will not change.
What will happen if someone outside the University dials the old
exchange after Jan. 18?
They will hear a recorded message, tailored specifically
to the University, indicating that a new exchange must be
dialed, be it 831 or 837. Long-distance callers will be
informed that they will not be charged for the call that
provided the recording.
How many months will the recording be in operation for people who
dial the old exchanges?
The recording will probably be on for at least nine
months, and depending on use, for as long as a year.
What if someone calls me before Jan. 18 using the 831 or 837
exchange?
There is already a recorded message in operation, though
it is not specific to the University, that tells the
individual that his or her call cannot be completed as dialed.
What about the new campus phone directory? Will it be correct?
This publication has gone to press and should be
distributed to the campus community in about three-four weeks.
With some exceptions, entries in the internal directory list
only the four-digit extensions of employees and offices.
What about Diamond State's Wilmington area phone directory?
The press deadline for this publication was Aug. 31. All
of the listings scheduled for the University have been changed
to 831 or 837. Diamond State has indicated that the new
edition will be distributed to all local residences and
businesses, including the campus, some time in January.
Will I need a new type of telephone on my desk?
No. Existing telephones will continue to work after the
changeover.
What about special equipment connected to our telephone lines, like
answering machines, FAX machines, computer modems and
Data-Over-Voice (DOV)?
These also will continue to work as before.
What about business cards, office stationery and other University
documents that feature telephone numbers?
Depending on when they will be used and their intended
audience, University publications and other documents should
be updated to reflect the new telephone exchanges. The Graphic
Communications Center and the Publications Office can provide-
and have been providing-assistance in planning these changes.
I work in Lewes. Will my number change?
Only the Newark switch will be affected.
Will the University be sharing the new exchanges-831 and 837-with
local residences and businesses?
No. These exchanges have been reserved for the exclusive
use of the University of Delaware.
