Open house; Renovated home makes positive impression

A new addition to the landmarks on South College Avenue is the
Victorian-style Visitors Center that was renovated during the
summer. If you're wondering if the University was able to capture
the style of the period on the interior of the building as well as
the outside, you'll have the opportunity to find out.
From Oct. 28- Nov. 1, University students and staff are
invited to attend an open house at the Visitors Center from 3
p.m.-5 p.m.
Faye Duffy, Delaware '80 and assistant director of admissions,
said the idea to hold an open house came in response to many
requests from members of the University community to tour the new
center. Although a few finishing touches need to be done, Duffy
said visitors will get a good sense of how the finished structure
will look.
The Visitors Center offers assistance and information to all
campus visitors. Tour guides for prospective students and their
parents leave from the center daily and escort groups through the
campus. Duffy said there is easy access with its location off South
College Avenue, near the new parking area. The center will be a
great asset in giving prospective students a good impression of the
University, she said.
The admissions office facilities in Hullihen Hall were not
able to provide adequate space to accommodate large groups, she
said.
In the new building, there is a room that can hold several
people and handle presentations and films that offer more
information.
Duffy said the house, which was purchased in the early 1980s
by the University, is listed in the National Register of Historic
Places.
The University's renovation project chose to preserve the look
of its original Victorian style. She said she hopes that it
provides a friendly atmosphere that will make visitors feel
comfortable, and so far campus guests have said it adds a very nice
touch to the campus.
According to Duffy, more than 18,000 visitors came through the
University last year, and she said she hopes that even more will
come through the center this year.
The staff is looking forward to decorating the building for
the holiday season and she said plans are underway to have a party
there for the tour guides.
