Talk on free speech scheduled Oct. 16
     Well-known Milton scholar Stanley Fish, chairperson of the
department of English at Duke University, will present a talk on
"There Is No Such Thing As Free Speech and It Is A Good Thing, Too"
at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 16, in 100 Kirkbride Lecture Hall.
     Fish has become a controversial but important figure in
literary theory, combining literary criticism, linguistics and
critical legal studies. He is the author of numerous works,
including Surprised by Sin: The Reader in 'Paradise Lost,' Is There
A Text In this Class? and his most recent book, Doing What Comes
Naturally: Change, Rhetoric and the Practice of Theory in Literary
and Legal Studies.
     In addition to chairing Duke's English department, he is a
distinguished professor of English and a professor of law there. He
also has taught at the University of California at Berkeley and the
Johns Hopkins University.
     His Delaware appearance is sponsored by the University Honors
Program, the Department of English, the University Faculty
Committee on Cultural Activity , the Department of Educational
Development and the legal studies program.
     The lecture is free and open to the public.

Alumni to gather in Boston Oct. 12
     Alumni from the University of Delaware will gather for a
pregame brunch before the Delaware-Boston football game on
Saturday, Oct. 12.
     Scheduled from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., the brunch will be held on
the  Boston University campus.
     At the brunch, local alumni will have an opportunity to find
out about recent developments on the Delaware campus and learn
about future plans.
     Members of the U.D. Athletic Department staff will provide
insight into the 1991 Fightin' Blue Hens squad. In addition, Bill
Clark, alumni associate in the Office of Alumni Relations, will
provide an update of recent accomplishments of students and staff,
new campus buildings and alumni issues, as well as answer questions
about the University.
     Cost of the brunch is $10.

SDALL to sponsor its first Fall Fun Fair
     The Southern Delaware Academy of Lifelong Learning (SDALL)
will sponsor its first annual Fall Fun Fair Festival from 10 a.m.-4
p.m., Saturday, Nov. 2, at the University of Delaware Milford
Center, 15 Southwest Front St. Raindate is Sunday, Nov. 3.
     Featured events at the free festival will include a square
dance, folk dancing demonstrations and lessons and a production by
the Second Street Players of Milford. For the children, there will
be pony rides and painted faces, balloons and popcorn. Sale tables
will be set up around the square with baked goods, arts and crafts,
plants, books and a flea market.
     SDALL is sponsored by the University of Delaware's Division of
Continuing Education. It is the southern Delaware counterpart of
the northern campus in Wilmington. SDALL was begun in 1988 by a
small group of interested and talented persons over 55. They
represented many professions and pursuits, from psychology to
religion to a variety of business enterprises.

Luncheon programs in Bacchus Theatre
     A magic performance, music programs and theatre performances
are some of the events scheduled for this fall's Bacchus Lunch
Series offered by the University's Perkins Student Center.
     Free and open to the public, all events will be held at 12:10
p.m., Wednesdays at Bacchus Theatre in the Perkins Student Center
on the University's Newark campus.
     Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis and guests are
 encouraged to bring a brown-bag lunch.
     The Harrington Theatre Arts Company will present a sneak
preview of its upcoming production of the musical, Godspell, on
Oct. 16.
     On Oct. 23, international entertainer Ethelwyn Worden will
combine Celtic mythology, legend, traditional music and her own
genealogy through storytelling with guitar and lap harp
accompaniment.
     A lecture/song demonstration will be given on Nov. 6, by Joyce
Hill Stoner, chairperson of the Department of Art Conservation at
the University. Her presentation is entitled "Sensibilities of the
20th Century as Seen Through Popular Song."
     Two student a capella groups, The Deltones and The D# Sharps,
will perform on Nov. 20.
     Concluding the series on Dec. 11 will be a cultural
celebration of Christmas, Kwanzaa and Hanukkah featuring many
Bacchus regulars.
