Computer system helps create customized diets

Whether someone is trying to lose that extra 10 pounds or has
a health problem that requires a special diet, "you are what you
eat" has much truth in it, according to University dietitian Debbi
Miller-Lewandowski.
Now, a computer system is available on campus for helping to
create customized diets for members of the University community.
Called Computrition, the system can perform many complex
configurations and perform individual weight goals and diet
analysis, Miller-Lewandowski said.
Computrition is especially helpful in conjunction with her
one-to-one counseling of students who have special dietary needs,
be it because of diabetes, a weight problem, high cholesterol or
other health problems, she said.
The system computes a personal weight profile based on height
and other factors and provides realistic weight goals.
It also performs individual intake analysis. A student enters
a list of everything eaten during the day into the computer. Then,
the computer gives an analysis breakdown of 20 nutrients.
Based on this information, Miller-Lewandowski can make
recommendations for improving eating habits by adding or
eliminating certain foods for a healthier diet.
In addition to individual counseling, Miller-Lewandowski plans
and evaluates menus for Pencader, Rodney, Harrington, Russell and
Kent dining halls, and confers with the purchasing coordinator and
the chef. To encourage healthy eating, Heart Healthy items, such as
oriental lemon-baked cod, are on every menu.
According to Miller-Lewandowski, University students have
become increasingly health-conscious and knowledgeable, and student
input is sought on food items, both informally and through surveys.
Since eating is the true test of good, nutritious food,
Miller-Lewandowski lunches almost daily in campus dining halls so
she can keep a nutritional watch on food quality and variety.
