'Happy Island'
Frank Earle Schoonover was a lifelong resident of the
Brandywine region and maintained his studio in Wilmington. A famed
illustrator and student of Howard Pyle, he painted this picture for
a book, Happy Island by Jennette Lee, published in 1907. The
painting can be seen with other Schoonover illustrations at the
"Brandywine Valley to the Bay" exhibition in the University Gallery
in Old College through Nov. 3. For this exhibit, the gallery is
open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, and from noon-5
p.m., Saturdays and Sundays. According to the exhibition catalog,
originally an elderly man with a cane was in the foreground, but
Schoonover later painted out the figure so that the picture focuses
on the Maine landscape itself and the small house below.
