Recycling starting in residence halls

A campus-wide recycling program involving all 65 residence
halls at the University of Delaware is now under way.
The program involves recycling of brown and green glass and
aluminum cans, according to Vicki Paisley, assistant director for
housing.
Clearly marked recycling containers have been placed in
television lounges, vending areas, laundry areas and common lounges
in all residence halls.
When containers are full, the custodial staff in each building
pulls the material and stores it in a central location. Every
Wednesday, the bags are put outside for collection.
Paisley said newspaper and plastic may be added to the
recycling program at a future date.
The program is the culmination of a two-year project begun in
l989. That year an ad hoc committee on recycling, chaired by
Caroline Tibbetts, associate librarian in the University Library,
was formed. The committee met over the course of a year and made a
number of recommendations that were forwarded to then University
President E.A. Trabant.
University President David P. Roselle followed up by forming
a University committee on environmental concerns.
