Campus smoking policy revised
The University's smoking policy has been revised and now
prohibits smoking in corridors, hallways, lobbies and offices,
according to Maxine Colm, vice president for employee relations.
A memorandum sent to the University community also states that
"If requested and where possible, unit heads or their designees
must establish as "Smoking Permitted Areas" rooms that have closed
doors and floor to ceiling partitions as long as ventilation is
adequate and non-smokers in adjacent areas are not exposed to
secondhand or side-stream smoke.
"The revised policy will appear in the University of Delaware
Policy Manual and will be incorporated in the Personnel Policies
and Procedures for Professional and Salaried Staff and the Faculty
Handbook.
Colm said that the impact of smoking on employee health was of
concern to a great number of University faculty and staff. There
was broad employee input in the development of the changes in
policy with representatives from the Salaried Staff and
Professional Advisory Councils working with the Committee on
Budgetary and Space Priorities of the Faculty Senate in revising
the smoking policy, she said.
