Dial-in access to University computers upgraded

Computing and Network Services (CNS) has completed a higher
speed dial-in service to the University's computers, after several
months of extensive testing.
When the installation is completed in mid-October, there will
be 40 lines that will support at least 9600 bps (approximately
1,000 characters/ second) connections, eight of which will be
designated for users in Kent and Sussex counties. Formerly, the
fastest lines available to off-campus dial-in users were capable of
2400 bps (approximately 240 characters/second).
In addition, the number of 1200/ 2400 bps lines that connect
to UDelNet, the campus network server, was recently increased. The
number of port selector lines was decreased at that time, but most
port selector users will be able to use a UDelNet connection
without changing the way they work.
However, UDelVM users who switch to a UDelNet connection may
need to try VMCon instead of UDelVM if they are experiencing
difficulties with the terminal.
The table at left summarizes the new configuration.
For information about purchasing a 9600 or 14,400 bps modem,

Users with questions about the difference between a UDelNet
and a Port Selector connection should contact the CNS Consulting
Center, 002 Smith Hall, at 451-1205, or via e-mail at
