'Quilting Time' featured in fall exhibit

"Quilting Time" is one of two works by the well-known American
black artist,Romare Bearden (1911-1988) on display in the "The
Brandywine Valley to the Bay" exhibition at the University Gallery
from Oct. 4 until Nov. 3.
Born in North Carolina, Bearden grew up in New York and
Pittsburgh. He attended Lincoln University in nearby Pennsylvania
for his freshman year, graduating from New York University with a
bachelor's degree in mathmatics in 1935.
He studied at the Art Students League in New York, and later
joined "306," a group of young black artists that took its name
from the building housing the WPA Harlem Art Project. It was at
this time he began to establish his reputation as an artist.
He is best known for his collages, and also for his prints and
paintings, all of which reflect his individual perspective on
universal themes as a black American artist.
