TAs to confer on effective teaching
     The 1992 Conference for Graduate Teaching Assistants, sponsored
by the Center for Teaching Effectiveness, is scheduled for Monday and
Tuesday, Aug. 26 and 27, in the Perkins Student Center.
     New and experienced faculty and teaching assistants are invited
to attend this annual conference which is intended to be a valuable
first step in creating confident, effective teachers. The program also
orients new graduate students to the University and its resources.
     Workshops and sessions include classroom management, running
discussion sections, common classroom problems, the human side of
teaching and personal development, among other topics.

Calligraphy features A to Z of Delaware
     "A Delaware Sampler," an exhibition of calligraphic art by
members of the Delaware Calligraphy Guild, will be on view through
Sept. 11 in Clayton Hall.
     Based on the concept of an early American sampler, the original
hand-lettered and colored pieces represent persons and places of
historic interest in Delaware from "A" for Amstel House in New Castle
to "Z" for the Zwaanendael Museum in Lewes.
     Clayton Hall gallery hours are 8 a.m.-8:30 p.m., Mondays through
Thursdays, and 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Fridays. For weekend hours, call

Contemporary quilt exhibit in gallery
     Quilts made of paper, feathers, beads, buttons, photographs,
copper, aluminum, paint, dye and fabric are included in "The
Definitive Contemporary American Quilt" exhibition at the University
Gallery from Sept. 8-Oct. 20.
     The curator is Bernice Steinbaum, director of Bernice Steinbaum
Gallery in New York City, who will give a public lecture at 7 p.m.,
Sept. 22, in Room 100, Kirkbride Lecture Hall, followed by a reception
and viewing of the exhibition.
     Local quilter Madge Ziegler will give a noontime talk at the
gallery on the history of quilt-making on Thursday, Sept. 17, and the
audience may bring quilts for her analysis.
     Vera Kaminski, associate professor of art, will give a noontime
talk, "Quilt: Image and Aesthetic," discussing the textile tradition
and the influence of quilt assemblage on other art forms, on Tuesday,
Oct. 6, at the gallery.

Saturday A.M. Music to begin Sept. 19
     Saturday A.M. Music begins Saturday, Sept. 19. The program offers
Kindermusik Beginnings for children 18 months to 3 years, accompanied
by an adult; Kindermusik, a program of music enrichment, for children
ages 4-6; and Elementary Music Workshop, with an emphasis on creating
an ensemble with children singing or playing the recorder while others
accompany them, for children ages 6-9.

     In addition, private instruction is offered for 12 weeks in most
instruments and in voice.
     Classes for instruments are open to anyone age 6 through adult;
for voice instruction, the minimum age is 15. The cost is $109, or
$100 per student if more than one child per family is enrolled.

Ice skating classes open to all levels
     Fall 1992 Community Ice Skating Classes will be offered on
Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and on Saturday mornings for person
ages 3 to adult, with the seven-week sessions beginning Sept. 3.
Classes are held in the Blue Arena.
     All levels of skating are taught, and each lesson includes one
half-hour small group lesson and one half-hour practice. Children
under 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
     The registration fee is $60 and skate rental is $2 additional per
person, per session.
