Literacy improvement courses available this fall at University
This fall, the University's Literacy Improvement Program begins
its sixth year of offering classes to employees who wish to upgrade
their reading, writing and spelling skills.
Sixty individuals have been involved in the program since the
first class was held in the spring of 1987. These participants ranged
from total non-readers to those wishing to refresh their skills in
order to obtain a G.E. D. or to take college-level courses.
Approximately 60 percent of the nation's workforce reads between
5th- and 10th-grade levels. With increased use of advanced technology
in the workplace, these skill levels are no longer adequate. The skill
improvements in reading and writing offered through participation in
the literacy program will allow employees to continue to upgrade
themselves both on and off the job.
Patricia Howe, program coordinator, will be holding classes at 87
East Main St.-in the first floor conference room-beginning Sept. 29,
on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from noon-2 p.m. and from 3-5 p.m.
Skill assessment testing will be offered from 1-4 p.m., Tuesday
and Thursday, Sept. 15 and 17. Class assignments will be based on each
individual's test results and work schedules.
