Employee committees to aid new center's opening
Several committees have been established to ensure that the new
Bob Carpenter Center will operate smoothly and effectively when it
opens this fall.
Members are developing policies and operating procedures in such
diverse areas as scheduling, ticket sales, computing support and
public relations activities.
The $20.5 million Bob Carpenter Center, currently nearing
completion on the south campus near the intersection of South College
Avenue and Christina Parkway, will be the new home of the Fightin'
Blue Hens men's and women's basketball teams and will provide locker
room, office and support facilities for the Delaware football program.
The center's arena has a seating capacity of 5,000 for basketball
and up to 5,800 for convocation ceremonies and other activities.
A concourse lounge in the center, home of the Bob Carpenter Club,
provides a panoramic view of Delaware Stadium and the arena.
An overall Transition Team has been formed and the members have
been asked to provide support and assistance so the center serves the
University and surrounding community in the best way possible,
according to Domenick B. Sicilia, interim director of the new
facility.
The Transition Team, which will work to effectively integrate the
Bob Carpenter Center into campus operations, includes, in addition to
Sicilia, Vincent DiLeonardo Jr., internal audit; Dan Grim, Network and
System Services; Mary Hempel, public relations; Mary Ann Hitchens and
Edgar Johnson, athletics; Barbara Kreppel, administrative services;
Jack O'Neill, recreation; Marilyn Prime, Student Center; Tory Windley,
purchasing; and John Nye, agricultural sciences.
Several ongoing subcommittees and boards also have been formed.
A Scheduling and Operations Subcommittee, which will coordinate
space usage, parking needs, traffic control and security services for
the south campus, includes Randle Clay, Dining Services; Cynthia
Haley, recreation; Vest Johnson, Carpenter Center operations; Kate
Pohlig, athletics; Gary Summerville, public safety; John Warren, plant
operations; John Nye, agricultural sciences; and Sicilia.
A Ticketing and Marketing Subcommittee, which will review
ticketing procedures for the Bob Carpenter Center and develop a
marketing plan, includes Gail Armstrong, publications; John Brennan,
public relations; Scott Eatough, athletics; Barbara Fleming, Carpenter
Center operations; Greg Johnson, conferences and centers; Vest
Johnson; and Sicilia.
An Arena Programming Advisory Board, which will recommend and
review proposals for a wide range of entertainment and cultural events
designed to appeal to both the campus and local communities, includes
Wendy Penc, Student Program Association; El Cid Jones, Cultural
Student Programming Advisory Board; Hempel; Kreppel; Prime; Sicilia;
and Summerville.
The board will work to ensure that bookings at the center
preserve the University's image and mission, Sicilia said.
