African-American orientation banquet set Aug. 28

     Edwin J. Nichols, a noted clinical/industrial psychologist,
working in organizational development, who held various positions at
the National Institute of Mental Health from 1969 until his retirement
in 1989, will be the keynote speaker for the African-American Freshman
and Transfer Student  Orientation banquet, Friday, Aug. 28, at Clayton
Hall.
     His talk, following the banquet for students, parents and staff,
is open to the public and will begin at 7:30 p.m.
     Nichols currently is director of Nichols & Associates Inc., an
applied behavioral science firm. He has worked with major
corporations, governments, government agencies, national associations
and health/mental health systems and is known for his approach to
issues of diversity in the workplace.
     Nichols held various positions at the National Institute of
Mental Health, retiring as director of technology transfer in the
Division of Education and Service Systems Liaison.
     During his career, he was a guest of the government of Guyana,
working with the ministries of health, transportation and education in
1971.
     Nichols also served as associate director of the Cleveland Jobs
Corps Center for Women, taught in the Department of Psychiatry at
Meharry Medical College and worked as a clinical psychologist at the
Kansas Neurological Institute, an affiliate of the Menninger
Foundation in Topeka.
     A graduate of Assumption College in Windsor, Canada, Nichols
attended Eberhardt-Karls University in Tubingen, Germany, and received
his doctorate in psychology and psychiatry cum laude from
Leopoline-Franciscca University in Innsbruck, Austria.
     Judith Gibson, assistant vice president for affirmative action
and multicultural programs, and Vernese Edghill, assistant dean of
students at the Center for Black Culture, have organized the
orientation program for African-American freshman and transfer
students, which will run from Aug. 27-30.
     Approximately 75 students will arrive on campus on the evening of
Aug. 27 and are invited with their parents to an ice cream social. A
general session, college advisement sessions and workshops will take
place on Aug. 28. The banquet will conclude the day's activities.
     On Aug, 29, the program starts with a brunch, followed by more
workshops and a picnic at Carpenter State Park for new students,
faculty, staff and recent alumni. That evening students may
participate in a variety of activities, such as ice skating or
bowling.
     On Sunday after a morning brunch, the program will conclude with
a meeting with alumni and a panel discussion and workshops.
