Sen. Biden promotes poultry lab

Delaware U.S. Sen. Joseph R. Biden announced on July 29 that the
U.S. Senate had approved $30,000 to study a poultry research
laboratory for the University of Delaware's College of Agricultural
Sciences.
The measure next goes to the Conference Committee of the U.S.
Senate and U.S. House of Representatives.
The feasibility study, which will be conducted by the U.S.
Department of Agriculture, is the first step toward federal support
for the construction of a $6.5 million biocontainment laboratory.
The research laboratory would allow poultry researchers to study
diseases, food safety and nutritional requirements and to develop
vaccines.
According to Biden, the $1.2 billion local poultry industry is
vital to the economy of Delaware and entire Delmarva peninsula. "The
study...could lead to the finest poultry research facility of its
kind. This would put the University and the Delaware growers at the
forefront of the poultry industry," he said.
Dean John Nye said that the College of Agricultural Sciences was
pleased with the support from Biden and Delaware U.S. Senator William
Roth for a major biotechnology facility at the University of Delaware.
