Counseling textbook published
Richard S. Sharf, counseling psychologist at the University of
Delaware's Center for Counseling and Student Development, has written
a new textbook, Applying Career Development Theory to Counseling,
recently published by Brooks/Cole.
The text is designed for graduate students enrolled in courses in
career guidance, career theory or career counseling. Its aim is to
help students learn how to assist clients with career concerns by
applying career theory and research to practice.
Through case examples the book demonstrates how several career
theories can be used in counseling.
A special feature addresses the application of career development
theories to women and people of color.
Sharf obtained his bachelor's degree in psychology from Brown
University, his master's degree in general psychology from Temple
University and his doctorate in counseling psychology from the
University of Iowa.
He has been employed at the University of Delaware since l969 and
also holds joint teaching appointments as an associate professor in
the departments of Psychology and of Educational Development.
He is a licensed psychologist in the state of Delaware and has
worked in many areas of individual and group counseling, including
personal and social adjustment, educational and vocational counseling,
crisis intervention and life planning workshops.
He has published numerous articles in professional journals,
spoken at many professional meetings and has obtained several grants
to develop computer-based career choice and career guidance materials.
