'Driving...dramatic' jazz trio concert July 14 in Loudis Hall
Jazz pianist and composer Sumi Tonooka will appear in concert
with her trio at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, in the Loudis Recital
Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building.
The group will be joined by special guest artist, jazz violinist
John Blake.
Tickets, at $8 for the general public and $5 for students and
senior citizens, will be available at the door.
Identified by jazz critics as one of the best of today's young
jazz pianists, Tonooka was recently described in Jazz Times magazine
as "a thoughtful, fresh voice, by turns delicate and
articulate...driving and very dramatic."
Though just beginning to gain national recognition,
Philadelphia-born Tonooka is no newcomer to the jazz scene. She has
performed for nearly 20 years. She was a recent soloist at the New
York JVC Jazz Festival and was a featured guest on Marian McPartland's
nationally syndicated public radio series, Piano Jazz.
She is a highly regarded composer and in 1988 was commissioned by
the Japanese American Citizens League to write a piece commemorating
the 50th anniversary of the World War II-era internment of Japanese
Americans. The resulting piece, "Out of Silence," was scored for
traditional Japanese instruments and a nine-piece jazz ensemble.
The concert will feature of mix of jazz standards, plus original
compositions from her recent CD "Here Comes Kai." In the afternoon
preceding the concert, Tonooka will present a lecture on jazz
composition and performance to teachers attending the Delaware
Institute for Arts in Education.
The July 14 concert is sponsored by the Office of International
Programs and Special Sessions.
