Summer employment guidelines

Departments hiring high school students for summer employment
need to be aware of the following restrictions governing the
employment of 14-, 15-, 16- and 17-year-olds:

     * Children under 14 cannot work.
     * Children 14 and 15 must obtain an employment certificate signed
by their school principal and their parent or legal guardian.
They may not work between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., and
their work may not exceed six days per week, 48 hours per week,
or eight hours per day. There are additional restrictions on
the kinds of dangerous work they may do.
     * Children 16 and 17 must also have a certificate but the
principal and parent's signatures are not required. Age must be
verified, however, by an authorized representative of the
Department of Labor or designated school official.
     * No exceptions are granted. Whether resident or non-resident, in
school or graduated, the person under 18 needs "work papers."

To obtain more specific information regarding work restrictions
and work permits, call the Delaware Department of Labor at 571-2882 or
the University's Office of Employee Services at 831-2171.
