Student affairs is now student life
The Student Affairs Division became the Student Life Division on
July 1 to more accurately reflect the unit's service mission. This
change is being made in conjunction with the opening of the new
Student Services Building near Newark Hall.
The Student Life Division includes the offices of the Vice
President for Student Life, Dean of Students, Perkins Student Center,
Counseling and Student Development, Career Planning and Placement,
Housing and Residence Life, Student Health Service and Student
Services for Athletes.
According to Stuart J. Sharkey, vice president for student life,
"All departments within the Student Life Division work cooperatively
with the campus community to challenge and support students to ensure
that they benefit from their University experience."
Student life departments provide services that promote a positive
and healthy campus environment. Sharkey said the name "student life"
effectively reflects the division's mission in helping students
maximize their educational, social and personal growth.
The mission of the Division of Student Life is varied, he said,
and its units are designed to promote an extracurricular environment
that supports the University's academic mission; supplements classroom
learning; assists parents in helping students identify and solve their
own problems; provides information on the full-range of University
services and problem solving assistance; promotes a positive,
multicultural campus environment; provides effective crisis management
for both physical and psychological problems; delivers primary health
care to students; provides opportunities to explore career options;
offers information about on and off-campus housing; provides personal
and group counseling; services and assistance to students with
disabilities; and provides direction for the Greek community.
