Grants received for arts, culture

     The Center for Black Culture and the University of Delaware's
Performing Art Series have received grants from the Mid Atlantic Arts
Foundation to partially subsidize performance fees and project
activities of performing artists.
     The Center for Black Culture received a 1992/93 Jazz Satellite
Network Program grant of $1,350 for a Feb. 27, 1993, performance by
Gerald Albright, a self-taught jazz artist. He will perform with local
musicians, providing opportunities for them to interact and learn from
his experience. The project includes a four-day residency with
workshops and lecture/demonstrations.
     The Performing Arts Series received two 1992-93 Music and Theater
Program grants, totaling $3,250. One helps support the Oct. 14
performance of the Uptown String Quartet, a traditional string quartet
playing jazz and spirituals. In addition to the performance, there
will be a noon lecture on women in jazz and black women in jazz as
part of a women studies lecture series.
     The other grant helps support the Nov. 20 performance of the
Relache Ensemble, a new music group, which also will give a Nov. 19
lecture/ demonstration in a public school and a Nov. 20
lecture/demonstration for music students and the public.
