Combined phone directory this fall
A combined University of Delaware student/faculty/staff telephone
directory will be published for the first time this fall, resulting in
considerable cost savings to the University, according to Gail
Armstrong, acting director of publications. Delivery date is Sept. 15.
DataNational of Chantilly, Va., was awarded the contract based on
the quality of its proposal.
In the combined directory, a number of enhancements will be made,
including use of employees' actual room numbers and building
addresses, as well as e-mail addresses for both employees and
students, Armstrong said.
The listings for students and faculty/ staff will appear in
separate sections, and advertisements will be restricted to the covers
and the final "yellow pages" section of the directory, she said.
"It is anticipated that the sale of advertising will cover the
costs of the publication and provide a source of income for the
Resident Student Association, which has traditionally published the
student directory," Armstrong said.
All employees have been given an opportunity to approve the
information appearing on them in the telephone listing, as check
sheets for each department were sent this spring to departmental
contacts for circulation to all listed employees. A follow-up letter
also went to each individual employee.
"This was both a check for accuracy and an opportunity to delete
home address and home phone information if an individual wished to do
so," she explained.
In July, a notice will again be circulated to all departments,
providing an opportunity to list new hires who have not yet been
processed through the personnel records system.
A special committee, chaired by Charlene Benson of the Office of
Administration, studied the idea of a combined directory, which is
becoming fairly standard at universities across the country.
Members of the selection committee included Armstrong and Richard
Gaw, publications; Linda Cofran, purchasing; and three students-Laura
Lipnick, RSA president, Veronica Maceroli and Jennifer Griesbach.
