Trustees modify bylaws, approve new construction
The University of Delaware Board of Trustees approved increases
in room and board rates and student fees and authorized the
administration to proceed with planning for construction of a new
student center and renovation of the existing Perkins Student Center,
at its regular semiannual meeting May 21 on the Newark campus.
Housing rate increases vary by residence hall type and will
average 4.5 percent. For 1992-93, cost of a traditional multiple room
will increase by $110 (5.7 percent) to $2,050, and a one-bedroom
apartment in Christiana Towers will increase by $140 (4.9 percent) to
$3,010.
Contract meal plan rates were increased an average of 6.6 percent
for the 1992-93 academic year. A variety of meal plans are available,
ranging from the 19 meals-per-week plan, which increases by $106 to
$1,706, to any three lunches a week, which increases by $35 to $570.
The trustees also approved increases in the Student Health
Service fee, from $103 to $106 per semester and from $29 to $30 for
Winter Session. A 3 percent increase was instituted for part-time
student charges, summer session charges and employee health charges.
These increases will go into effect in June, with the first
summer session.
Effective in September, in connection with the plans to build a
new student center and renovate the Perkins Student Center, the
student center fee will increase from $10 to $25 per semester. This
fee applies to full-time students, excluding those enrolled in the
University Parallel Program.
The Board of Trustees authorized the president to spend up to
$1.5 million to secure architectural and other professional advice for
the design and cost estimates for a new student center and renovation
of the Perkins Student Center. The Perkins Student Center was
originally designed for a student population of 7,500, and a second
student center in a central campus location would be able to
accommodate the needs of the current student population.
In other action, the trustees approved:
* authorizing the president to confer degrees at Commencement on
May 30.
* renovation and construction projects in Rodney Dining Hall,
Eliot, Smyth and Mitchell halls, the University Archives Building, the
South Chapel Street parking lot, Belmont House, the Sharp Laboratory
cooling loop and Colburn Laboratory design;
* elimination of the interior design major, as recommended by the
dean of the College of Human Resources, in consultation with the
chairperson of the Department of Textiles, Design and Consumer
Economics, with course offerings through spring 1995 to allow for the
completion of the major for currently enrolled students;
* revision of the trustee bylaws, reorganizing the board itself,
to enhance participation in the affairs of the University by persons
who have an interest in the institution and would be helpful to it;
* granting of permanent status to the Ph.D. program in
criminology, after a unanimous recommendation by an external review
team; and
* establishment of the Douglas F. Carpentier Memorial Fund as an
endowment fund with income used in support of the University's
intramural sports program, at the recommendation of the dean of the
College of Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation and the
Carpentier family.
