Televised town meeting on global warming, two days before summit

At 5:30 p.m., Monday, June 1, two days before the Earth Summit
opens in Rio de Janeiro, WHYY-TV (Channel 12) will air a town meeting
and discussion by two scientists about the degree of responsibility
humans have for the warming of the Earth's atmosphere.
The discussion will be held at WHYY's studio in Wilmington. The
town meeting will take place on the University of Delaware's Newark
campus in Newark Hall auditorium and will be linked to the studio via
transmitter.
Larry Kalkstein, professor of geography at the University and
nationally know expert on climate and heat, says there is ample
evidence that energy production using fossil fuels creates gases that
trap heat in the atmosphere.
Patrick Michaels, associate professor of environmental studies at
the University of Virginia, teaches a course entitled, "The Greenhouse
Effect and Public Policy." He frequently lectures and debates the
significance of the human factor in global warming. His position is
that research linking warming with energy production is inconclusive,
and shouldn't affect policy decisions.
The public as well as campus and civic groups have been invited
to attend the town meeting on the University campus. Those attending
the town meeting and viewers who call the station will have the
opportunity to question Kalkstein and Michaels at points throughout
their discussion.
