Baseball ends outstanding season
The Delaware baseball team capped an outstanding 1992 season
going 1-2 at the NCAA Atlantic Regionals at the University of Miami.
The Blue Hens, the North Atlantic Conference and East Coast
Athletic Conference tournament champions, advanced to their 10th
overall NCAA regional appearance, and the first since the 1983 season.
The No. 5 seed Hens lost to No. 2 seed North Carolina State in
the opening round 6-2 before coming back to down No. 6 seed University
of Maryland Baltimore County 6-5. The Hens were eliminated from the
six-team tournament with a 12-6 loss to No. 4 seed Notre Dame on
Sunday.
With the NCAA appearance, the University of Delaware became one
of just seven NCAA Division I schools to qualify for NCAA post-season
play in football (including bowl games), basketball and baseball
during 1991-92 athletic season. The others were Georgia Tech,
Stanford, Florida State, Ohio State, UCLA and Oklahoma. The Blue Hen
football team won the Yankee Conference and competed in the NCAA I-AA
playoffs (losing to James Madison) and the Blue Hen basketball team
won the North Atlantic Conference and advanced to its first-ever NCAA
tournament (losing to Cincinnati in the Midwest Regional opening
round).
The Blue Hen baseball team finished the year with a record of
39-14, setting a school record for wins in a season.
