Cast off with student Sailing Club

"Ey, mate Welcome aboard." O.K. this isn't exactly the way Drew
Woodall, commodore of the University of Delaware Sailing Club talks,
but other sailor slang like "tack' to the wind" and "raise the jib" do
creep into his conversation.
The Sailing Club has been afloat for 26 years, and this has been
its best year ever, according to Woodall. Ranking 15th out of 40
teams for this racing season, the club hosted its first regatta in 10
years--the Delaware Spring Invite.
Next fall, it will dedicate the McCurdy Regatta, named in honor
of its faculty adviser of 25 years, Wallace H. McCurdy Jr, associate
professor emeritus of chemistry.
During the season, the Delaware club has competed against teams
from St. Mary's, Princeton, Rutgers, Washington College and the U.S.
Naval Academy.
Racing is not the only interest of the club's 70 sailors. Some
members are only interested in the sport as recreation. The club is
planning more recreational adventures for next year, such as day-long
leisure sailing and overnight trips.
From September to November, and again from February until June,
sails are hoisted and boats are cruising. Participating in the
Sailing Club involves a commitment through the full school year.
Club members are not all experts. For sailors who are a little
rusty with the rudder, instructional classes and practice sessions are
offered at the club's home at Triton Marina in Elkton, Md.
