UD recognized for involvement in AP

The University of Delaware has received a 1992 Advanced Placement
(AP) Program Recognition Award of the Middle States Regional Office of
the College Board. N. Bruce Walker, dean of admissions, accepted the
award on behalf of the University at the College Board's regional
meeting.
According to Howard Carlisle, program coordinator, the awards
were given to four institutions and 11 educators, with a review panel
of past awardees making the selection. The University of Delaware has
been instrumental in fostering the AP program for several years, and
the award recognizes its active and ongoing support, Carlisle said.
The University has had a long-standing interest in the AP program
and has a policy of accepting students' credits earned in
college-level courses during high school, according to Walker.
"We have found that the applicants who take these courses are
better prepared and that the high schools that offer the courses are
above average," Walker said.
The University has supported the program in other ways, such as
hosting conferences for the College Board and holding summer workshops
and programs for AP teachers, according to Walker.
