History has shown that a primary cause for large loss of life in
building fires has been overcrowding. The ability to evacuate
occupants safely and quickly during an emergency can be directly
related to compliance with the allowable occupancy limits and exit
design.
University facility operators should be especially aware of these
facts when preparing for graduation.
The areas used for ceremonies and related events, such as
convocation, are normally utilized at full capacity. The following
items need to be considered when using a space for public assembly:
Maintain free and unrestricted use of all exits; maintain illumination
of exit signs and exit passageways; maintain proper aisle space
between rows of chairs and tables; and educate attendees on proper
emergency procedures.
Proper emergency response procedures are specified in the
University's Policy Manual under Policy #7-6.
The Department of Occupational Health and Safety maintains a
collection of the applicable codes and ordinances and performs code
reviews to answer questions for members of the University community.
By overseeing code compliance, the department improves the safety of
University facilities and decreases the University's liability.
For answers to questions about the use of University facilities
for public assembly, call the Department of Occupational Health and
Safety at 831-8475.
