Hal Marden named head of facilities planning department
Hal Marden, a professional engineer who has been serving as a
consultant on the new chemistry/ biochemistry laboratory facility, was
named interim director of facilities planning and construction,
effective May 1, replacing James M. Dougherty.
David E. Hollowell, senior vice president for administration,
announced the appointment today and named a search committee to seek a
replacement for Dougherty, who resigned to return to the Washington,
D.C., area.
The search committee, chaired by Thomas F. Vacha, director of
plant operations, includes Norma L. Gaines, assistant dean of the
College of Human Resources; Timothy R. Becker, assistant director of
housing and residence life; Jon H. Olson, professor of chemical
engineering; and Barbara J. Sharkey, assistant treasurer for
disbursing and purchasing.
The director of facilities planning and construction has
responsibility for architectural and engineering services and all
construction performed under contract, except for repairs, maintenance
and minor construction.
Before his retirement in 1990, Marden held a variety of
engineering assignments for the Du Pont Co., including work in New
Jersey, Delaware, Kansas, Tennessee, Kentucky and North Carolina. He
moved to Wilmington in 1973 after directing construction of a
multimillion-dollar synthetic fiber expansion project at Du Pont's
Uentrop Works in Germany.
At Du Pont, Marden served as regional construction manager for
plants in the East, Southeast and along the Gulf Coast; as process
design manager for the Textile Fibers Department; and as engineering
manager for Du Pont's Diverse Businesses-Medical Products,
Agricultural Products, Auto Products, Imaging Systems and Electronic
Systems. He also assumed responsibility for the international and
staff departments, handling approximately $300 million in capital
investment worldwide, with primary responsibility for ensuring that
projects met cost, schedule, quality, safety and financial objectives.
Marden attended Colby College and the University of Maine at
Orono, and he holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. A
registered engineer in the state of Delaware, Marden is a member of
the American Society of Civil Engineers and the National Society of
Professional Engineers.
