Academy gets 'point of light' kudo

The University of Delaware's Academy of Lifelong Learning, a
leader in educational programs for mature adults of retirement age,
recently was named a citationist in President George Bush's Annual
Points of Light awards.
In a letter announcing the award, Richard F. Schubert, president
and chief executive officer of Points of Light, wrote that the academy
was one of 60 finalists considered from over 4,500 nominations. A
special certificate from President Bush is being sent to the academy,
which has served as a model for similar programs across the country.
In her nomination of the academy for the Points of Light Award,
Florence Garrett, program coordinator, wrote that the academy is
almost completely a volunteer organization where "everyone contributes
his or her time and talents." In addition to its educational program,
the academy has an outreach component, sharing academy courses and
programs with retirement homes and community groups.
In the nomination, Garrett wrote, "The academy provides an easily
accessible activity for social interaction, mental challenges and a
most rewarding kind of volunteerism." Without volunteers it is
unlikely that the academy could ever have become the "successful,
viable and contributive group it has grown to be," she wrote.
In 1991, the academy received statewide recognition when it won
the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce Superstars! in Education award
in the post-secondary school category.
