Colleges recognize scholars at Honors Day ceremonies

The eight undergraduate academic units at the University cited
their top scholars during annual Honors Day ceremonies held May 12 on
the campus.
Students were honored for their accomplishments in scholarship
and leadership and for their personal contributions to their
respective colleges and to the entire campus community. University
President and Mrs. David P. Roselle held a reception for honored
students and families and sponsors in Clayton Hall before the honors
convocations began at 11 a.m.
At Honors Day, four faculty members were presented
excellence-in-teaching awards, made available by the Christian R. and
Mary F. Lindback Foundation and the University Alumni Association.
Selection of recipients is based primarily on thoughtful evaluations
written by students in nominating faculty for this award.
Faculty members are honored for their mastery of their subject
matters; sensitivity to the interests, needs and concerns of students;
and the ability to broaden the students' perspectives.
Honored this year with the $2,500 faculty awards were Gabriella
Finizio, instructor in foreign languages and literatures; Kenneth C.
Haas, associate professor of criminal justice; Bernard Herman, senior
policy scientist in urban affairs and public policy; and Kevin J.
Kerrane, professor of English.
Two graduate students also were honored for excellence in
teaching: James Crowley, in English; and Rhonda Eller, in computer and
information sciences.
Two members of the Delaware faculty were presented with awards
for excellence in undergraduate academic advising. Joseph Pika,
associate professor of political science and international relations,
and Georgia B. Pyrros, instructor in mathematical sciences, each
received the $2,500 award, which is given to emphasize the importance
of excellent academic advising, to recognize and reward excellent
faculty advisers and to encourage faculty to devote more time and
attention to becoming more effective advisers.
