Computers streamline, tasks improve office productivity
The Office Systems Group within Computing and Network Services
helps University employees automate time-consuming manual tasks. The
group performs office and departmental needs analyses and makes
recommendations for automation.
Office Systems consultants work individually with employees to
streamline and automate their existing manual procedures and to
improve office productivity and efficiency.
According to Laura M. Hofstetter, manager ofthe group, "Offices
run more efficiently when computers can automate repeating tasks. An
automation project was recently completed in the Academic Advancement
Office, and projects in the Office of the Dean of Students' Office and
Department of Music are almost finished. Those offices are
experiencing a more efficient way of completing daily tasks, and they
are helping to conserve the environment."
New electronic forms are replacing multi-page paper forms,
offices are reducing the amount of paper they use, and the amount of
storage space required is shrinking, she said.
Nancy Geist, assistant dean of students, said her office's new
computing system, which tracks students' academic and judicial
records, has "saved us time, money and paper."
Sometimes, the transition and changes required to automate office
procedures seem overwhelming. However, the Office Systems staff adapts
the transition to fit the ability and experience of the individuals
involved. Very often, those employees who initially showed reluctance
to accept the "new way" become the strongest supporters of automation.
