Ceremony to celebrate science, honor contributions
Conferral of two honorary degrees and the groundbreaking
ceremony for the Lammot du Pont Laboratory will mark a "Celebration
of Science" at the University on Friday, Sept. 27. Delaware Gov.
Michael N. Castle also is scheduled to speak.
The celebration will begin at 11 a.m. in the auditorium of
Newark Hall, and honorary doctor of science degrees will be
conferred upon Edward G. Jefferson and Walter E. Massey. Jefferson
is retired chairman and chief executive officer of the Du Pont Co.
and is currently vice chairman of the University's Board of
Trustees. Massey recently began a six-year term as director of the
National Science Foundation, after serving as vice president for
research of the University of Chicago and for Argonne National
Laboratory.
At the ceremony, Massey will deliver an address on "Priorities
for the Future of Science: Mind Over Matter?"
Also featured in the ceremony will be recognition of the start
of construction of the Lammot du Pont Laboratory, just east of
Memorial Hall. The new 66,500-square-foot laboratory will provide
expanded and modernized research space. The new facility is
expected to be completed in the fall of 1993.
