Bike registration cuts theft
Bicycle registration is on a roll at the University, according
to Vince Shipman, investigator in Public Safety with more than 600
bicycles registered.
There is no fee for the service, and Shipman encourages bike
registration for the entire University community, including
students, faculty and staff.
When a bicycle is registered, the serial number, make, number
of speeds and other identifying features are recorded along with
the owner's name, address and telephone number. A numbered decal is
then attached to the bicycle and the information is recorded in a
computerized tracking system.
When a registered bicycle is stolen and recovered, Public
Safety can contact the owner. The system has already been put to
the test and is working, according to Shipman.
The decals themselves may discourage bicycle thieves from
stealing registered bikes. On the other hand, he said, thieves may
then steal an unregistered bike, which is one more reason for
participation.
