WXDR DJ: John Lupton

          Name: John Lupton
          Show: Rural Free Delivery
          Time: 12 - 2 p.m., Saturday
          Occupation: Computer repair technician

When John Lupton was offered the chance to have an old-time
country/bluegrass show at WXDR in 1989, he jumped at the opportunity.
Lupton, who graduated from college with a communication degree,
originally wanted a job in radio. But jobs were scarce so he turned
his attention to other career paths.
Today, he co-hosts Rural Free Delivery with George Mercer. Lupton
and Mercer met through the Brandywine Friends of Old Time Music.
Through their association with this group, they also met WXDR DJ Carl
Goldstein. When a position became available at the station two years
ago, Goldstein asked the duo if they would consider filling it.
The offer was, for Lupton, the chance of a lifetime. Through his
involvement, Lupton enjoys the radio experience he wanted after
college and the chance to play such artists as Hank Williams and Doc
Watson.
"We have a very loyal audience," Lupton said, "because we play a
kind of music they can't hear on commercial radio." Lupton said his
favorite part of doing the show is when listeners call up and thank
him for playing a song that brought back memories.
