WXDR DJ: Jerry Grant
Name: Jerry Grant (with daughter Liza Jane)
Show: Hip City, Part 2
Time: 6-9 p.m., Saturday
Occupation: Substitute teacher, student, musician
For 13 years, Jerry Grant has been spinning old 45s by his
favorite black artists such as James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Otis
Redding every Saturday on WXDR.
"Hip City, Part 2", which was named after the B side of a single
by Junior Walker and the All-Stars, merges rhythm and blues and soul
music from the '50s, '60s and '70s. Grant distinguishes these artists
as deep soul and prefers playing Southern blues to the Northern jazz
and Motown artists.
Grant emphasizes giving credit to the black artists who pioneered
soul music, which is often remade by white musicians today. This was
the music he grew up with, he said, and he has enjoyed uncovering
black musicians' identities while appreciating their talent.
Grant's three-hour slot every weekend provides a pleasant break
from his hectic weekday schedule, as a student, husband, father and
substitute teacher.
After working 20 years in retail, he decided to change careers
and currently is studying at the University to receive his high school
teaching certificate. He substitute teaches in the Christina School
District.
Grant also is a musician, playing the piano and organ in a band
called "The North Street Four." His band performs early rock'n'roll
such as the Rolling Stones and The Beatles.
Most of his spare time is spent with his family, and he expresses
his love for soul music by making tapes of his favorite artists
singing children's songs. These he plays for his 3-year-old daughter,
hoping she'll come to love the sound as well.
