Video system demo to connect Newark with Lewes campus

Diamond State Telephone Co. will present a video conference
symposium at 9 a.m., Monday, May 4, simultaneously at two University
sites-Studio C in Newark Hall in Newark and Room 203 of Cannon
Laboratory in Lewes. Diamond State will explain and demonstrate its
compressed video system by linking the two campuses, illustrating the
potential uses of this technology.
The program will begin with a technical presentation from 9 a.m.
until approximately 10:20 a.m., followed by a demonstration until
noon. Technical staff, administrators, deans and faculty members have
been invited to attend at both sites.
Interested faculty and staff also may see the system in operation
May 5 and 6. To make arrangements for a demonstration, call Lonnie
Hearn at 831-3548 in Newark or Kent Price at 645-4256 in Lewes.
As part of the demonstration, Jonathan Sharp, professor of marine
studies, will teach his regularly scheduled class from 11 a.m.-12:15
p.m. on May 5 from the Newark location using the compressed video
system. According to Susan Foster, vice president for computing and
network services, compressed video technology is less expensive and
requires less equipment than full motion video technology. During the
past few years, the cost has decreased substantially and the
technology has improved. Marine studies, continuing education and
agricultural sciences have expressed an interest in this technology,
she said.
"The University has been reviewing compressed video technology
for several years, and we are pleased that Diamond State is coming to
demonstrate its system and show how it can benefit the campus
community," Foster said.
