Unistate bus service is discontinued
The Unistate public transit bus route between Newark and Lewes
will make its last run on June 30, according to Douglas Tuttle,
director of public safety.
The bus service, which originally received a rural transit
subsidy from the federal government, has been underwritten by the
College of Marine Studies and the Delaware Department of
Transportation (DelDOT), which split the operating deficit of
approximately $7,150 per month.
"The bus service was not cost-effective and served relatively few
people so the College of Marine Studies decided to explore other
options for transporting faculty, students and staff between the
Newark and Lewes campuses. DelDOT was notified about this decision in
December," Tuttle said.
According to Richard Tarpley, executive officer of marine
studies, the college is working with the University to establish a
daily courier service to deliver mail between Newark and Lewes.
There are no plans for passenger service, but the college does
have some vehicles at its disposal and may use these to serve the
transportation needs of the college.
