Tips for smart food shoppers

If you're intrigued by the information you might get on a
supermarket tour, you also may enjoy these smart shopper tips,
compiled from the Pocket Supermarket Guide put together by the
American Dietetic Association:
     * The cheapest way to buy fruit juice is in frozen concentrate.
     * Frozen berries are less expensive out of season than fresh
         ones.
     * Frozen vegtables with sauces may be high in fat or sodium-check
         labels.
     * Beans and peas can help control blood sugar and lower blood
         cholesterol because of their fiber.
     * Read labels to see if low-calorie bread is simply sliced
         thinner.
     * Suggested serving amounts differ on cereal labels. Some use 1/4
cup servings, others use 1 1/4 cup.
     * Most people put one rounded teaspoon of sugar on cereal-that is
equivalent to eight grams of sugar per serving on an already
         sweetened cereal.
     * If you eat a fully fortified cereal, you may not need a
         multivitamin.
     * Turkey rolls and chicken nuggets are made with ground skin and
may contain a lot of salt.
     * Chicken and turkey franks may not have less fat than beef
franks; they may just be smaller.
     * Crackers and cookies made with vegetable shortening,
unspecified shortening, butter, coconut and palm oils should be
         consumed in limited amounts.
     * The most healthful beverages are skim or low-fat milk, water
         and fruit juices.
