English Language Institute moving to West Main, former French House
The English Language Institute (ELI), currently located on Amstel
Avenue, will be moving to the Curtis Mansion, formerly La Maison
Francais (French House), at 189 West Main St. , around the end of May.
Scott Stevens, ELI director, said this move will fulfill "a
seven-year dream" to incorporate the institute's services under one
roof.
Currently, these areas-housing, teaching, cultural programming
and tutoring-are located across the campus.
The move to a larger facility will tell international students
they are valued, according to Stevens.
The institute plays several roles, many of which assist other
University departments, such as helping visiting foreign scholars and
their spouses with language difficulties, coaching international
teaching assistants and sponsoring community outreach programs to
local schools, he said.
Faculty offices are being planned for the old ELI building. The
French House now is located with other organizations in special
interest housing in the Ray Street residence halls.
