Service sorority's collection awaits transport to Russia
Nearly one ton of food was collected earlier this month from the
University community for the Russian Student Relief Project. The food will
be sent to aid Russian children.
Members of Gamma Sigma Sigma service sorority coordinated the
collection of food from campus organizations. The University program was
part of the statewide project, which has collected some 17 tons of food.
Students Wendy White and Elaine Esposito and University graduate
Zoanne Nelson, Delaware '86, of the Delaware Council for U.S.-U.S.S.R.
Relations, organized the effort.
The Delaware National Guard picked up the University's collection
March 11. The food has been consolidated and is awaiting transport to
Russia at Dover Air Force Base.
Particular items of need were 5-pound bags of rice, flour or sugar,
1-pound boxes of spaghetti and canned tuna fish or meat.
Ten volunteers from other universities participating in the project
will go to Moscow to help distribute the food to about 5,000 children in
three schools.
Some members of the University community donated money, which was used
to purchase food supplies. The University Bookstore donated 10 sweatshirts
for the volunteers going to Moscow.
At least 10 other University organizations participated in the
project, White said. For example members of Kappa Alpha fraternity went
door-to-door in off-campus apartments, gathering more than 1,200 pounds of
canned goods.
